  1. A particle which is smaller than an atom. The
  2. proton, electron, and neutrino are the only
  3. stable particles. The neutron is stable only
  4. when in the atomic nucleus. Over 200 other
  5. unstable particles are known from experiments
  6. with particle accelerators and cosmic
  7. radiation. All decay rapidly into other
  8. particles and are characterized by such
  9. properties as their mass, charge, spin, and
  10. lifetime. Particles that are influenced by
  11. the `strong' nuclear force are known as
  12. hadrons. These are divided into heavy
  13. particles, baryons, which include the proton
  14. and neutron, and intermediate-mass particles,
  15. mesons. Light particles that are influenced
  16. by the `weak' nuclear force are known as
  17. leptons.
