A particle which is smaller than an atom. The
proton, electron, and neutrino are the only
stable particles. The neutron is stable only
when in the atomic nucleus. Over 200 other
unstable particles are known from experiments
with particle accelerators and cosmic
radiation. All decay rapidly into other
particles and are characterized by such
properties as their mass, charge, spin, and
lifetime. Particles that are influenced by
the `strong' nuclear force are known as
hadrons. These are divided into heavy
particles, baryons, which include the proton
and neutron, and intermediate-mass particles,
mesons. Light particles that are influenced
by the `weak' nuclear force are known as
leptons.
